under a technicality Washington was not actually the first president, but the second. I forget who actually was president before Washington and this person was only president for a few days until Washington was able to take the reigns. Washington therefore became the fist actual president and become what we know today as the first president. So the answer legally is technically: General George Washington.

John Hanson was technically the first president under the articles of confederation. Washington was the first president under the Constitution.
