You think the minium wage is low. You should see what a waitress/waiters minium wage. two dollars and fifteen cents an hour. Its justified by the government because they are assuming that most people will leave a tip.
Yes there is a class system divide it's become more and more apparent in the last 6 years.

The minimum wage in the US is low because the unions have placed too many demands in Health care, and this has led to outsourcing of jobs to other countries. Americans should realise that the quality of life is based on hard work, not military might. Americans are very willing to work two or more jobs, and that is something we, as Canadians should take a lesson from!
I once thought Canada was the richest country in the world, but a Minnesotan upped me about that. Anyway, I like the Americans so much that I married one from the Commonwealth of Massachusettes! We fly both flags in this neighbouhood, and if there was any reason to stand by our neighbours down south, I would not hesitate to help defend their country from terrorists!

That is open for debate. However, when minimum wages go up, inflation normally follows.
The local grocery store raises salary to new employees $1.00 per hour. The employees that have been there longer now need a pay raise to keep them at least as far ahead of the new employees before the minimum wage law.
I shop at local store and notice that prices have risen because the grocery store must cover the added cost of the minimum wage set by Federal law. I need more money to buy food.
I ask my boss for a raise due to inflation; boss realizes the cost of food has gone up because they eat food too. Before I get my raise, boss asks for one first. I'll probably get the same percentage that my boss received; they do not want to give me more than they get.
Business owner now sees they must pay more for their staff; must raise prices to their customers to cover additional labor cost.
It goes on and on and on.
One thing to realize is that VERY few people actually earned minimum wage across the country; salaries and wages are as low as the market will bear and still be able to maintain a qualified staff.

I suppose the minimum wage is so low because so many people have to work for it .
The people who receive the minimum probably have no union to look after them and there are always employers willing to exploit people with no power.
Someone said on here that America is the greatest country in the world.
Well I suppose if you are talking about real estate you might be right but consider .
There are more guns in America than there are people , there are more murders in America per day that in most European countries in a year and yet every effort to restrict the ownership of guns is defeated .
It was also said on here that England will soon be a third world country but America is rapidly turning into a latinised country .and in some states in the deep south 50% of the population live in third world country conditions .
There are more millionaires in America and there are also more people living below the poverty line .Torture is forbidden in America but the CIA routinely transport prisoners across the world to countries where torture is allowed to do what they call interrogate agressively.
The world is a sad place

On paper, the USA is the richest country in the world!..But its only on paper, so staggering is the American international debt that , thanks to Dubyah and the American corporates they can never keep up the interest payments, sooner than most think the good ol' US of A, is going to default on debt repayment!.The US credit rating will crash, the dollar will slide to almost the level of the peso, and most Americans know nothing about it!..All those people who think their retirement funds are safe, will learn otherwise pretty bloody quickly that the $500,000 they thought they were getting will end up being worth about $6.30 as the money all streams "offshore"!..Along with the corporate executives who started all this in the first place!.they will suddenly become 'transnational corporates', claiming they are global and have nothing to do with the collapse of the American economy!..Give it another 5 years, thats all!

The minimum wage artificialy raise everybody else wages in the long run. your telling businesses what to pay employees thus to compensate they raise the price of their product, which the consumer has to pay, thus as this cycle continues upwards untill it reaches the top consumers evrybody has to pay more so they need to make more all in the end run makeing minimumwage workers still way at the bottom. It's a tax increase when you break it down. because the increses are alway passed down to the end result the products that we purchase, peeling off a percentage to the goverment. Nu the Democrats care as the buy voters and pad their pockets.

Minimum wage is not meant to be a career aspiration...Your first job you may get minimum and in a very short time you should be getting raises...
...It also inspires people to get training and or college to better themselves, after all you can't pay a doctor minimum for 8 years of colleges and college loans...
...I agree it would be hard to live on, but someone just entering the work force can qualify for government housing, and food stamps if need be...Hope this helps.

You could have the min at 10 hr or even 100 per hour.
But milk would be 7 or 50 dollars a gallon.
economics 101
If the wage goes up the cost of the product must go up to cover it.
