I am due for an upgrade on my current contract, I would like to keep my current phone, but also use the new one. This would only be practical if I can clone my sim card.
I don't want a second number, I don't want pay as you go and I don't want to take out a second contract.

AND WHERE CAN I OBTAIN A SUITABLE SIM?

It is not possible. In particular, there is a secret key in the SIM that is used to encrypt the radio channel and is also associated with your identity. The only other copy of this key is held securely by the network operator.

**It is not possible to read this key from the SIM**. If it was, there would be a big illegal trade in copied SIMs where you could get free calls by hijacking someone else's account.

Go to a mobile phone shop and buy a Sim Card Reader and the software to go with it. This will enable you to download all your contact details onto a PC via a USB Lead and Port. You may then edit the information, if you so wish, and re-load it to your new Sim Card. They are not expensive - it should cost you about £10.00. They are handy to duplicate your contacts and phone numbers on your PC anyway, in case of loss of your phone. You'll be suprised how popular you'll become with your mates, because I'll guarantee they'll want to borrow it. Just make sure you remember who you have lent it to and make sure you can get it back.

Some phones already have a mini USB port. If this is the case all you need is the software and appropriate USB lead, the type you use with a digital camera.

You'd probably be able to get one off e-bay. Sorry, but I gave my last one away, otherwise you could have had it with pleasure. Hope this helps.

I think if you go into your phone book there should be an option somewhere which allows you to 'copy all' either to your phone or your sim. Depends what phone you've got but there will be an option somewhere that lets you do this!

All the above is errrrrrr, not strictly true,

It is possible but due to the laws of this country i'm not going to tell you how or where.

Better you don't know, it might take you down a road you wouldn't want to go.
