They are essentially the same. But in detail, Great Britain is England, Scotland and Wales. United Kingdom is officially United Kingdom and Northern Ireland (but the NI but has been dropped and is understood to be referred to as the UK).

The United Kingdom (UK) comprises of England, Scotland and Northerh Ireland, They all have a king or Queen (Auntie Liz) ie they are all monarchies (Kingdoms).
Wales on the other hand is a Principallity, it has a prince, the prince of Wales (Charlie boy, Unlucky for them).
Great Britain comprises of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland
