UK has a very high level of binge drinking.

Is this caused by coping with such a messed-up society or just an unexplained trend?

I think there are several factors behind our behind our binge drinking society.

Firstly we are all so stressed out all the time due to the pressures of modern life that we use alcohol to switch off.

Then there was the nineties with TV programs like "Ibiza Uncovered" and "Club Reps" which glamorized our growing binge drink culture making it seem a desirable lifestyle choice to go out binge drinking.

Then there is the breakdown of structured society and its rules which allows millions of feral youths to feel like they can do what they want every night with a blatant disregard for anyone or anything that gets in the way of them having a "good time".

There is also the TV advertising which very cleverly advertises its products towards it's market (young people) making alcohol seem sexy and desirable.

Nice question! I think that the standards of drinking in the UK are disgusting. From Thursday night through to Sunday the nation indulges in getting well and truly - whats the phrase.....PLASTERED.

I don't think you can blame "the messed up society" and it's not really unexplainable.

People drink socially "to unwind" and they totally unravel!
They associate drinking with fun and fun with drinking. They reward good behaviour with a drink and bad behaviour with a drink! A drink to celebrate and a drink to grieve. Any excuse for a drink - eh!

The government can try and address the issue but it is down to the individuals who drink and at the end of the day the up and coming generations see drinking in excess as "normal"..........

What does the future hold!

People have always done a lot of drinking. Today's definition of binge drinking (I think it's 5 drinks in one sitting for a male) is absolute trash. You cannot have a binge in one day let alone with 5 little drinks.

Nope. It's because of the way they close the pubs there so darn early. Freaking mental way of doing things, but hey; that's England for You! Drink up Lad, we're cheering for You!!!!

No. Alcohol is a depressant. Abuse of alcohol is a reflection of individual self-medication as a way of temporary escapism. People don't 'escape' from 'society' - they try to escape their responsibilities, relationships -- but mostly --- themselves.
