That depends on your printer. If you don't have the manual go to the manufacturer's website and look up the manual or instructions using the name and model # of your printer.
If you know how, you can try opening it up and look at the ink cartridges to see how much is left. If it's color there will be more ink cartridges to check too. Many modern printers have software that checks the printer's ink supply. You can usually find this by going to Start ->Printers and faxes and right clicking on your printer's icon. Choose Properties, then Printing preferences and you should get a proprietary property control panel for your printer. If there's a way to check for ink supply using software it will be in here.

Click on Printers and Faxes in the Start command. There should be a few models of printers. Right-click on the printer you are currently using and click properties. Fidel around with the dialogue box until you will find ink levels.

some printers will allow you to check ink in the "properties" of the printer.
You can remove the ink cartridge and shake it.
When printing if the cartridge is low you will see narrow white lines through the printed text. Lines = low ink level.

What model of your printer are you using? Hp, Lexmark, Canon...?
Some printers allow you to check with using Properties. Some printer will allow you to check in printer maintenance. Some printers will have warning if it's in low ink. (aka low ink warning.)
