When you want your LAN connected to a global network such as the Internet, you contact an ISP or bandwidth provider and purchase a connection to their WAN. Their WAN is interconnected with all the other WANs that make up the global network.

In short, when a LAN is connected to the Internet, it connects to a WAN that is interconnected with many other WANs on a global scale. These WANs vary from core WANs, which make up the backbone of the internet, to service WANs that provide means for LANs around the world to connect to the global network.

I'll give you a simple example to explain this:
Consider that you are working for a Multinational Office.
The Computers that are in one particular building and connected with each other are under Local Area Network.
If the Local Area Network (within a office) is connected to another Local Area network of a different branch at different city is called Wide Area Network.
If a Wide Area Network is connected to a another network of the same Company across the globe it becomes Global network.

All are networks. Local Area Network is limited to a single site. WAN for two or more sites and global network is something that spans across many many sites across continents. LAN is single site with multiple Network points. WAN and GN is a collection of many LANs.
