the total displacement is 25.
now if you assing the east direction as the positive one then you should consider -25.
displacement is important and it is a vector as distance is. in later and adance physics it is important to know if the displacement is at the same direction of a positive or negative one.
as in flow. if you have a pipe that air flows to it and you try to move a body like the problem you described it is essential to know whether the flow is eastwards or westwards. it is easier to move it in one case and more difficult the other.
at your level i feel that 25 is acceptable.
