I am trying to create a database that I expect to grow to about 500,000 entries in the next year and a half. I am thinking about using a stand-alone MySql to start, with the hope of making the scaling easier. Could someone suggest how to go about this?
Thanks

One option is apache2triad:
It includes apache, php, mysql, postgres, xmail, slimftp, perl and python.
It is good, but it might be overkill.

Also see http://www.uniformserver.com/
I've not used this but my brother showed it to me. It is portable (if you want can run off a usb flash card) and includes apache, mysql and php.

Both include phpmyadmin, and can be accessed with openoffice database.

Download mysql4.1.10-nt for WIndows 2000/XP and just run the installer from Windows. Then use the COmmand Line client or any other tool like Mysql Query browser and Administrator for creating the database and doing other activities using the GUI.

You need the following:
1. MySQL ODBC driver
2. MySQL CC (control center)

Install #1 first. Test in odbc32 (control panel>Administrative Tools>ODBC)
Click on Add, Then you should see your MySQL driver.
Click on it and supply the data source name (any name), OK when done.

Install #2. Use this to create your database, database name, and tables. This control center is a graphical interface for creating fields, tables, and etc.

From this point on, you must decide what front-end programming langauage you will use, like PHP, C, or JAva. Coz each of them has differenct syntax in connecting to the MySQL database.
