You'll need the Metalcoat. Go to celadon (in Fire Red/Leaf green) and get a lemonade. Then head to the islands fro Vermillion and travel to island 2 or 3 and head south where you will find a boy mourning his onix. Place the lemonade as an offering and he'll give you a metal coat. It can be used to evolve either scizor or onix. Then give the item to your onix to hold and trade with a friend/yourself if you have a second gameboy and it will evolve. Trade it back to your game and congrats, you have a steelix!

you can evolve your Onix with give item metal coat to your Onix then trade it with another game boy

you have to give your onix an exp.share so that whichever Pokemon fights any battle it gets experience and try to make onix fight with high leveled fire Pokemon and onix evolves only through exp

well, you have to have onix hold a metal coat, and then you have to trade it ot make it evolve....
