This banging could be anything, especially if it's an older house. It could be water or other pipes or a breeze blowing something around that isn't secured well enough.
Put a recorder, tape and video if you can, downstairs and see if you can capture a few EVP's going on (voices that you can't hear normally) and maybe catch a shadow or movement on the video. Of course, everything is better in digital, and for the EVP's an actual 'tape' may not record long enough to catch anything. And you should leave on a very dim light for the camera unless you have a night vision one.
You may want to take a few pics down there too to see if you can catch an orb or two, best chance is when the noise is going on.
You should look into it first and make sure nothing is loose that can be blown around. Nothing hanging down, like clothes, that can be mistaken for the unnatural. Make sure things that could move and impact other objects are secure and can't move.
Set up the camera to watch where you think the banging is coming from, and set the audio recorder near but not in the same area, let them run all night and see what you have in the morning.
EMF meters are good, but be sure to take a base line reading before the actually looking for a change in the numbers. Electrical wires and boxes are notorious for drastic number changes. Light sockets will change the numbers. Some piping material will also change the numbers on the meter, so be sure to get the base line numbers first.
I'm betting that it's a natural thing and not a haunting.

Most wood frame houses creak and pop and make strange groaning noises due to the lumber expanding and contracting with the changing temperature. It tends to happen mostly at night and pine framing lumber sometimes contains resin pockets that under the right conditions can actually explode with a loud startling bang. It can even sound like footsteps in an upper floor where you've been walking during the day as floorboards get compressed from the weight of footsteps and then later regain their form, it can be very unsettling and eerie sounding. Or maybe you have a ghost or other paranormal activity going on down in your basement, have you ever seen one, but then who do you call?

You could try contacting Mary Ann at maryannghostbuster.com. I would give you the link, but my favorites just disappeared again. You have to call her on the phone and she can tell if there is a presence there. I have been meaning to contact her ( she's in Ohio about 30 miles from me.) We have a problem with disappearing objects. The last time our car keys were gone for about 3 days then they were right back where they always were.

I did spend lots of time in this Victorian living house that replaced into outfitted in 1860 and observed/heard really some unusual issues. At nighttime, now and again it looked like the living house got here alive. We heard what looked like human beings shifting bags up and down the steps. The mattress room door swiftly only opened slowly like someone replaced into coming in. interestingly the persons that owned the living house earlier were accepted to depart in the course of the nighttime afraid. i replaced into sitting on the great of between the staircases and that i felt like a cat replaced into strolling behind me, close yet not touching. No. the really cat contained in the living house replaced into contained in the rest room really a distance away ingesting. i could see him. it can not were him. he's quickly yet not that quickly. My boyfriend's father concept he enable the cat out yet he did not. He observed the cat a couple of minutes later. He replaced into like, what cat did I enable out? there is really one cat. not some thing fairly scarey occurred. We only suggested, nicely that replaced into unusual even as extraordinary issues occurred. I had spent some nights contained in the living house through myself with the cat.

It is probably just the plumbing or you have been reading too many Stephen King novels before bed. If you have a boiler type heating system they make noise. But they do have people who will come to investigate if you really feel you have a haunted house. I am sure you can find them online.

If you've got some money burning a hole in your pocket, you could invest is some paranormal investigation equipment.

I bought an E.M.F. meter for about 30 GBP, and you can get loads of other stuff, too.
