Sometimes I think I block out the normality of life by buying quite a few cd's and dvd's, books and mags to pass my time. Does anyone else do this, try to immerse yourself in your hobbies so much just to forget about the mundane rat run that is life.

I mean it could be worse right, i could immerse myself in sex, drugs or alcohol

It sounds like you're bored and doing what you're doing, is one way to beat the boredom. There's nothing wrong with it, but it does limit you. Why not find other people, who share your interests, and exchange ideas, thoughts, opinions with them? By doing this, you still enjoy your activities, but expand your mind.
You are right, it could be worse..........
