If i wrote the sentence: I could smell the putrid odor of old sweaty socks.

do i put a comma between old and sweaty? are there any other mistakes?

Yes, two or more adjectives should be separated by a comma. The rest of your sentence looks OK.

Yes, you have to. Two or more parts of a sentence that have the same function and are included in an enumeration (like in your sentence) are always separated by commas.
Examples: The old, dirty, smelly sweater was thrown away.
Vicky, Allen, Gina and Carl like to play football, basketball, volleyball and baseball.

Notice: don't use comma before the word "and" if "and" makes the connection between two parts of sentence (or two clauses) that have the same function.

no I wouldn't put a comma between the two... my english teacher told me once that you only put a comma there if you need to take a breath in you sentance you don't.
