Muggles has explained why plant with needles can survive frozen temperatures. However evergreens do lose their needles as they age--they just lose them little by little all year around. Anyone who has ever had a pine tree has seen thousands of needles on the ground under the tree. Deciduous trees lose all their leaves at one time--the fall. Evergreens as I said lose theirs little by little so there are many green needles at any given time of the year, including Christmas.

There are a few broadleaf plants that also keep their leaves in the winter, like holly, and they too become associated with Christmas.

Evergreen trees are always green because of the type of leaf they have which is like a slender needle, Conifers thrive where it's cold and windy. Most trees don't survive these conditions because they can't drink water from the frozen soil. But the waxy coating on the conifer's long, thin needles help these trees conserve water -- and stay green all year round.

They are not always green! There is Blue Spruce and Yellow Pine & Scotch Pine. The Green trees just contain more chloraphyll than the others and are more common! Broccoli and also grass are in same colors green, blue and yellow, brown grass is dead grass! It's good that Broccoli contains so much antioxidants that the chloraphyll in it don't put U to sleep!
