Because YOU Are FAR North of the Equator and the sun's solar axis has changed to favor the South.
The sun rises in the East, shines on your Southerly exposed garden - leaving the North in the shade of your house - and it sets in the West.

Because the sun rises in the east and moves in a clockwise direction. It sets in the west, therefore south is in the middle, which means a south facing garden is the sunniest. In the morning you would get the sun coming from the left (east), midday directly (south), and evening from the right (west). My garden faces south east so I get the sun all day until about 5 oclock then it moves round to the front. I would never buy a house with a north facing back garden. The first thing I would ask would be which way does the garden face.

Whether you live in the Northern or Southern Hemisphere, the sun rises in the East and sets in the West.
During the winter months, the ellipse (travel) of the Sun is lower in the horizon, due to the tilt in the Earth's axis.
So in the Northern Hemisphere, South-facing walls will get more sunlight, the opposite in the Southern Hemisphere.
It is an important factor in building a home by solar principles: windows facing the winter sun will give you a warmer home. In Summer, deciduous trees or wide eaves protect these windows.
As we approach the Summer Solstice (the "longest day") the Sun travels more directly overhead

Because the sun passes the UK to the south (if that makes sense). If you lived in Australia or another country to the south of the equator, the sunnier side would be the north facing garden.

Because the apparent motion of the sun is from the east to the west, via the south. Thus a north facing garden will receive no direct sunlight. Its caused by the tilt of the earth's axis.

Sun rises in the east, but it will be in a south kind of east right now. Sping where the east is now, the sun will rise midway until Summer where it will be at it's highest point. North and South will remain constant loooking east South is on the right, Norht is behind you. West well they use to say go west young man. Thought all americans knew where that is. West will always be where the sun sets. Sorry you already had enough information in here anyway

Due to the tilt in the earth's axis, if you're in the northern hemisphere, the sun is angled to the south. For this reason, a north facing garden gets overshadowed by the house/building to the south.
The opposite is true if you're in the southern hemisphere, where the sun is angled to the north.

Usually a south facing wall is called for to protect tender new plant growth in areas with late frosts. It warms more quickly in early Spring, and protects as a plant comes of dormancy. It protects flowers on fruit trees grown against the wall early in the year. This helps to set a better crop. In winter, a southern exposure keeps the plant sheltered from winter winds and prevents dieback.
I remember that the garden at Mount Vernon, George Washington's home, was planted on a south facing slope with a stone wall above the garden for protection.

A south facing garden gets sunlight throughout the year, whereas North facing one gets only in summer. Hence a south facing garden is better, where one can sun inthe cool winter months.
