Why would someone hurt themselves?

In this martial art demonstration 2 girls (about 110-130 pounds) jump on a guys stomach from a chair.

How can he take that and why hurt yourself?

lol. He is doing this for the greater good. In order to teach them to protect themselves he has to let them demonstrate how they would defend themselves on him. So even though he is in pain he can live through it knowing they are gaining something from his pain. Some people have high thresholds for pain too so he might not even feel nothing. Maybe a sting but it goes away.
