I remember a pop version of Ben E. King's song in the late '90s by a group called 4 The Cause. It wasn't too bad, pretty upbeat.

There is no other version of Stand By Me in the British Chart records during the 80s. Ben E King's was re-released in 1987 on the back of it being used as the title of - and theme music to - the Stephen King written Stand By Me film, but it was simply a re-release. You may be thinking of the Fugees who had a version - though it never made the British charts

I'm not sure if this is the version you're thinking of, but Maurice White (of Earth, Wind & Fire) released a version of "Stand By Me' in the late 80's. It was a pretty good cover - a little more uptempo than the original, but still recognizable as Stand By Me.

A few people have covered this song including John Lennon in the 70's and (I think) re-released in the 80's after his death.
