The good sport shoes is very good. then, you must need a map, try not get lost in vietnam, especially in the big city ( ho chi minh or ha noi...). you will be helped , and welcomed warmly. I really sure about that. some places you should visit are: Ha Long Bay in Quang Ninh, Phong Nha Cavern in Quang Binh, Hoi An acient street in Da Nang, Sapa city in the north of vietnam...

It is a very safe country. Hanoi and HCMC are a lot safer than most American big cities. People are very friendly and there is so much to see and do. As everywhere in a strange country you should be careful and dress conservatively. You and your cousins will have a wonderful time. Eat from the street venders and drink Bia Hoi. Both are very reasonable. So many places to choose from to visit and most are either free or very cheap. Cheers

I'm staying in Ho Chi Minh, and I found the streets to be extremely safe!.. even safer than Kuala Lumpur. That's for the city.. if you are going into the jungle, you'll need a guide.. which you can hire from any of the many tour guides in the city center. 2 star hotels are about USD 30 a night.. clean, comfortable and friendly service.
There are tourist police, and the backup police patrolling the streets 24 hours a day in the city.

yes it OK, the country is slowly improving. Just like all other asian countries, common sense precaution must be exercise at all time. Ok i heard the air quality there is quite bad so is the water -better drink bottle of water. Like most tourists try to bargain alot or you get rip-off. Take care in the street too, because the traffic is chaos - they only have limited traffic light.
Oh when you go and eat in the restaurant becareful, because last time my friend when there she was eating this soup called 'pho' a famous beef soup-instead of beef, after she finished, she found out it was dog meat.
Some place you may want to visit - they have theme park there, like water world and stuff. If you travel to other part go to Vung Tau and Da Lat - it like a holiday restort, there moutains, waterfall and all sort of thing.
Hvae fun - from you Vietnam tour guide

yes it is generally safe for tourists. We went for 3 weeks, and didnt experience any issues. However, the locals treat their women differently then westerners. I saw this one girl get smacked HARD by her boyfriend in public. nobody even blinked. Sapa is cheap and nice. the whole country is really cheap. the most expensive place (and generally my least favorite) was hanoi. the people were really rude there overall. other than that we had an awesome time!!!
