Knowledge for knowledge's sake is known as "pure" science. This is where the discoveries are made.
Known science used for something (like technology) is called "applied science".
Lately it has become fashonable to only fund applied sciences, because they produce something. Meanwhile, pure sciences starve slowing the process of science down (because the applied sciences have little to do with research).
