China is a power to reckon with in the future especially that it s booming a an economic power. Later, it might develop superior arms and might engage in military adventurism in conquering other countries.

Reading the future is always difficult. China has become so economically intertwined with a variety of nations, it is not likely it will ever gain the unprecidented amount of power the United States had. While it may huff and puff and conduct some military exercises here or there, it likely will resort to economic blockades and embargos to get its points across. China is a difficult country to attack, to another country forcing its retaliation is unlikely.

Several things, however, could change this. Taiwan remains a global flashpoint for war. China recently has become increasingly bullish and aggressive towards the "breakaway province", as has Taiwan's government (calling for independence referendums, believe it or not, for the first time). And forced invasion of the Taiwanese state by forces from China's mainland would draw international responses. However, these would most likely be economic (which would be as crippling, imagine a US embargo on chinese-made goods, services and tourism, and the impact that would have on their economy?). India and China, though warmer in relations than the US and USSR, continue towards a sort-of Cold War, with both sides continuing rapid arms build-ups (India has always had its eye on China, China has always had its eye on the US, so on and so forth). Both are trying to assert their influence over huge (and overlapping) swathes of south and southeast asia. Any major military action by India (lets say the complete invasion of Pakistan, one of China's allies) could prompt chinese military responses, likely drawing other countries into the fray).

I don't think they want to start wars. Yes, their military is said to be the world's largest. My bet is that it is primarily for defensive purposes and a show of strength. The Chinese government would love the world to stay out of their internal politics (and stop sneaking in Bibles) while they continue to get rich selling products around the world. They also want everyone to leave them alone about Taiwan.
