The rights and wrongs of driving large vehicles for mainly urban use is another issue.
The real issue here is STEALTH TAX!
Anyone who answers you negatively here has fallen into tony blairs trap of divide and conquer.
Ok so someone objects to you for excessive hydrocarbon production but they choose to spend the money they saved driving small cars in 2 long haul flight holdiays this year.blair is going to tax them heavily too under the guise of enviromental issues. So you could then disapprove of their excesses. Its all tonys game.
If he cared that much he would have spent the money he gives in welfare to immigrants on public transport.
get him out ,lets get a real govt in who cares about us and our country.

Driving a 4x4 in London is a complete waste of money and as you sit there just idling at all the traffic jams and lights . Why would you bother .
I drive in London daily and cant understand why people would use a 4x4 to take their kids to school. They are not any safer . Hit a kids and tell me they are safe.
But on the environmental issue. What about all the people driving around London in the Aston Martins , Ferrari's , Bentley's , Rollers and such. Huge engines sucking in more fuel than any 4x4 and alot of the time they are also alot bigger than a 4x4 . Surely it can not be good for these engines to be designed and built to be high performance engines running at high speed not sitting at the lights all the time.
Lets not just tax the 4x4 lets tax all the big engines that are being used in cities.
Mark B = Where in London do you find some smooth roads to drive on. For all the money that the congestion charge makes the roads are in a shocking state.

4X4 drivers are already taxed at a higher rate by the extra gasoline they use. The idea of trying to zero in on one kind of car is absurd. Also just because the vehicle is 4 wheel drive does not mean it is putting out more emissions. The worst NOX emissions offenders are diesels and they pay more per gallon in taxes than anyone else.

As Britain contributes just 2% of the world's CO2 emissions and of only 13% of that 2% is from vehicles, its a load of bollocks to say that taxing 4x4s off the road will make any difference at all in the wake of China and India's industrial escalation.
Anyway with fuel taxes being so high 4x4s are self taxing if they use so much fuel. Tax which gets spent looking after the whinging, jealous have-nots that resent other people's democratic choice to have whatever vehicle they like.

What excessive taxes?
We have limited road space and we have growing problems from COs emissions and worries about energy supplies. In London, more people were killed in road accidents than in the terrorist attacks of 7/7 last year.
Large vehicles like 4x4s take up more space, generate more emissions and use up more fuel than the average car. They are also more dangerous to pedestrians, cyclists and other road users if involved in a crash.
So running a 4x4 in the city is not just a personal choice of the driver, it has major anti-social effects on many other people.
At the moment 4x4 drivers pay no extra tax. But I think they should!

Maybe there will be work with a company that makes
sensible cars.
4X4 is not necessary for mothers to drive kids to school.

i don't agree with the use of 4X4's for general use on the roads.
However i think the goverment way of charging extra tax (recently in the form of parking permits and congestion charge)is purely a way of upping already overinflated taxes, painted with a pretty picture of 'its for the environment'-- this has left people arguing about environmental issues, instead of arguing about rising taxes.view answers on here to see what a clever 'spin' it is !!!!

Its about time the Government spent their time improving the quality of life for those less well off in this country instead of taxing everything.
What the hell has it got to do with anyone what cars people want to drive, those with larger cars pay more for petrol etc and, surely it is up to them what they want to drive, and all the money the Government make from road tax and fuel tax should be spent on improving facilities to make driving around better by building more roads and widening roads and, generally making our journeys safer and quicker instead, our money goes to pay salaries to Government Officials doing jobs none of us have ever heard of.
We should all get off our backsides and protest and stand up for ourselves after all have you seen the size of our government cars and, even the Police use 4X4s,what sort of example is that.

Because if people complain about having to pay more for their Gas-guzzlers. they might have to admit that they can't afford them and the whole illusion of conspicuous consumption would be threatened. I say, Tax them until the pips squeak (Thank you Dennis Healy - not that you ever did!)
