The current thought is that the mind needs to work on an object that it likes (even if that object is frustrating ie: golf) so when the stress of real work comes it will be ready.

It's a big part of what people live to do outside of their necessities. In some cases, it's a good way to meet people. It keeps people out of trouble. And, it's just plain fun.
