In this film I think he may be a police officer who has to protect a woman from the japan mafia and the end takes place on a long train journey where he has to fight loads of guys with his sword and ends up walking the lenght of the train fighting them. Great film

Sounds like it could be a movie called The Hunted with Christopher Lambert. Yet another obscure film he did...
It took place in Japan and the was a scene with a Samurai, a famous instructor, fighting against a large number of bad guys on a train to protect a woman....

The Hunted with Christophe Lambert, the woman sees an assassination by ninjas on some important dude. At the end of the fight on the train (which is in the middle of the movie) the samurai master, who is helping to protect the girl, puts the sword into the train floor then snaps it in half because its a dishonour for someone else to touch the sword. Christophe Lambert gets roped into helping and it culminates in a Samurai vs Ninja fight at the end. Christophe Lambert wins.

I think it might be a Jackie Chan movie, Shanhai noon also has a fight scene on a train but I don't think thats the one your looking for.
