In general, with regard to race and religion, certain groups have historically voted in predictable ways. It is just by habit I think.

In general, you will find that gender does not play as large a role in voting patterns as does age, race, income, and religion.

Research and countless national surveys throughout the years have shown 2 recurrent themes with regard to age and income. There are always exceptions on both sides, but these are 2 long-standing trends that continue to this day.

1. As people get older (and arguably wiser) they tend to vote more conservative, are more likely to identify themselves as Republican, and more likely to vote for Republican candidates.

2. As people's income level rises (and are arguably more successful) they tend to vote more conservative, are more likely to identify themselves as Republican, and more likely to vote for Republican candidates.

People are supposed to vote for people who are closest in ideology to themselves. If they don't it means they are stupid or don't really know who is running.
