I have had IBM Thinkpad and am now using a Toshiba. Both are fine. But which one is the best is your decision.

Well if you're not including Macs (which would be my first choice) and durability is one of your things I'd suggest the Lenovo (used to be IBM) or Toshiba Toughbooks. They're built to be sturdy and tough. Most laptops should be mobile though, that's kind of the point. :)

Just stay away from the machines that weigh upwards of 10 to 12 pounds. They usually have desktop processors in them, are heavy, hot and get terrible battery life. I have only personal experience with Dell and Mac and I like the latter for numerous reasons. Good luck!

One more thing: Stay away from Gateway machines. Every person I've known has had nothing but trouble with those.

Go to Circuit City or Best Buy and pick up the Toshiba Satellite A105. My friend just bought one and it's very nice and very fast. It only costs $900 and it has all of the latest "bells and whistles". Here's a link to it:

Buy American brands first. Both Dell and HP/Compaq are very reliable.
