PettyJoel, if you had a clue yould know that it's 51 to talk to him, and then probably 60 to sign him for 5 years, because i can not imagine they would only sign him for three after bidding 51 million dollars for the right to speak to him... and the 100million is a guestimate, not an exact number Mr.Professor.... if it were 51 plu 35 to sign him i'ld have said 90 million, 51 plus 23 to sign him, ild have said 70 million...get it buttmunch?

First, just to clarify something about the $51 million, the RedSox only have to pay it if he agrees to a contract. If he doesn't agree to a contract, the RedSox don't pay anything. Secondly, he is being represented by Scott Boras, who is notorious for getting players the most money possible.

Boras also only wants a 3 or 4 year deal, allowing Matzusaka to become a free agent before he turns 30 years old, allowing him to hit the free agent market in his prime and command an even larger contract. (of course this all becomes a moot point if he doesn't sign)

From the reports that I've heard, it's expected that if he signs it will be for around 10 million a year. So ultimately they will end up paying 80 to 90 million dollars for a 3 to 4 year contract.

This is all stuff that I've heard on espnews.

I think that they will sign him. Even though he's never pitched a major league game, he has faced, and performed very well, agianst major leaguers in the World Baseball Classic. He dominated in the World Baseball Classic earlier this year, winning the MVP for the tournament.

Look at the other posts to answer the question.

To the commentators that are down on the Red Sox for shelling out tons of money, why don't you look at the cause of the increased spending in the MLB. Look at the players and their agents that have over the years commanded more money. George Steinbrenner was probably the only idiot willing to pay millions and millions of dollars to put together a team that would dominate baseball. And that's exactly what he did--and it worked for a few years.

Recently, the game has been catch up to the Yankees, not just for the Red Sox but for every other team out there that wants a World Series title. The Sox take the approach that if you don't spend the money then you will have no way to get to the World Series. They have to win the AL East or get the Wild Card. For teams like Oakland, they can spend little money and get young players, develop them, and maybe still have a good shot at the playoffs.

Yes, it's true the Red Sox have the second highest bankroll behind the Yankees, but if you would have been paying attention, they have been trying to get rid of one of the major contributors for a couple years.

Bottom line-- hate the players like A-Rod and Manny that won't play for less than some astronomical amount. And don't give me the crap how A-Rod didn't choose his contract, it's called a negotiation for a reason. They are the reason why the Red Sox are willing to fill their gaping hole in the pitching staff by spending a ton of money on a prospect, it's the best option they have.

specific the purple Sox dont have a competent rotation as Shilling and Wakefield are previous, Beckett has a ton of questions surrounding him, Papelbon has no longer been examined adequate as a starter and the purple sox want new pitching. Barry Zito is yet another pitcher on the marketplace yet his fly-ball inclinations has scared away hypothesis (needless to say fenway certainly isnt that ordinary to hit residing house runs in yet human beings think of it somewhat is) and he would be yet another pitcher of interest. And basically what the purple sox have finished is paid 25 million to chat and 26 million to keep away from him from going to the Yankees (they'd maximum certainly have publish a good greater quantity for a freelance in the event that they hadnt underestimated the sox). Dont get me incorrect, they desire his arm badly. He has outstanding stuff that he has shown that he can administration very properly. no longer basically that yet bringing him to the sox will certainly carry a number of Japan into the purple Sox fan base which the Yankees have traditionally ruled. he's the eastern fashionable precise now and is supposedly extra respected than Matsui replaced into, the sale of purple sox kit and broadcasting rights in Japan would in all probability pay for the fifty a million interior of distinctive years he's with the purple sox.

Of course they will.......They will do anything to compete against the Yankees. It's almost like the pennant or even the world series isn't important anymore. It's all about beating the Yankees 18 times during the regular season. If the Red Sox went 18-144 for the season but won the season series against the Yankees 18-0 those idiots would be perfectly happy. Remember, Japanese baseball is nothing more than AAA caliber baseball at best. The major leagues will light up Mr. Moto like a Roman candle. I can't wait to see this guy pitch in Yankee Stadium against that powerful lineup. They will send him back to the land of the rising sun.

First of all, you contradict yourself in two sentences which has to be a record of sorts. You ask if they are paying 51 mil, then 60. then said NO they are paying 100 mil, which (minus doing the math that it adds up 111 mil) is the same thing.

Second, the answer is short, yes they are trying that.

Third, he is the most wanted pitcher this season, more so then Zito or Schmidt, and he is young. Signing him would give the Sox Pappel and Matz for years to come, buiding up a rotation that could be one of the greats like the Twins have.

I guess they can't talk about the Yankees payroll and buying championships, but Red SUX need all the help they can get. Maybe he can get them into the division playoffs at least. My Yankees kick Red SUX butt...26 to 6. Two years down only 84 more to go for another Red SUX Championship!

No, 51 million to talk and then around 39-45 million to sign to a multi-year deal.

Yes-they figure they will make some of the money back by selling Bosox merchandise etc. in Japan. I don't know how that will work out because sooner or later Japanese ball fans will get over the novelty of Japanese MLB players. I figure the Seibu Lions hit the jackpot on this one.
