Yep. Or predestined. You, for example could work as hard as humanly possible to succeed, then the company you work for closes or sells out and there you stand, unemployed, even as brilliant as you are with an empty wallet and the wolves at the door. Don't let all these answerer's fool you that say otherwise, for the events in other peoples lives can affect, change or end yours and there is not a thing you can do about it.
Another example; you drive to the mall. You stop for a traffic light, the car behind you does not stop and rear ends you. The driver of that car is fine, but you are paralyzed for life with a spine injury. You go through pain and surgeries the rest of your life. Now, was it bad luck you decided to go to the mall, or was it your brilliance? You can see life could be like a roulette wheel with someone other than a human spinning it and then your number comes up. Your path may cross just one other person and it can change your life forever, so is that luck or fate? You meet two single women, you can't decide which to marry and you struggle to decide, you propose and marry one and hurt the other one.You have two children. Then you learn the woman you married only married you for material reasons then deserts you. Now you created two kids that look like her. If you never married her and choose the other woman, then would those children have existed at all? One of your children grows up to be a fine person and later in your life is always there for you. The other child moves to another state and kills another person in an auto accident, then you learn the one he killed was the grandchild of the woman that hit your car and made you paralyzed, there were 4 people in that vehicle and the grandchild was the only mortality, luck or destiny? No man is an island.

Faith in luck can be a negative feature because it can mar the intensity of efforts and thereby reduce the chances of success.
But of course, in order to succeed, some luck is necessary on top of all the work, which has to be right as well as hard and intense.

I have found out that the most efficient way to succeed is to really be indifferent to the needs of others while at the same time be able to manipulate them without them realising it. Luck doesn't have anything to do with this all

This is the formula for luck:
Luck = Opportunity + preparation
Think about it. There is a world that exists outside us. People affect us. They present opportunities (and challenges, problems) to us. No matter what, we don't control the whole world. We do, however, control our response.
So whatever some self-help gurus might say, there is such a thing as "things happening to us" - which is called "fate."
And there is such a thing as "how we respond to what has happened to us, or how have we made ourselves gradually able to increasingly control our circumstances through preparation, active thinking, and increasing our influence" - which is called "choice."
Choice is exerted by those who are "prepared." Otherwise, we may be left with "chance" or "chaos."
You need opportunity. And you need preparation to be able to accept that opportunity. Preparation means having your resources (physical, human, financial, spiritual) in order and ready.
Good luck!

Luck happens, and it's important to be ready to exploit it when it comes, but if you rely on its appearance as part of your plan, you're not going to do so well.
Even brilliance is overrated; hard work and determination will get you through most things.

Luck is a belief that some significant part of your fate is beyond your control, at the mercy of random (or not-so-random) chance. To that end, luck is a very dis-empowering notion. It's like praying to some god to make your life better.
So if anything, believing that you need luck will probably make you less successful, as you will probably not do all that is actually in your power to make your life better.

I'm not superstitious, but I'm not so arrogant as to believe everything that happened in my life was solely m own making. There are things beyond my control, and for them to exert a positive influence in my life, that takes luck.

The key to success in life is hard work. I don't know anybody who has become successful through luck. Learn from your mistakes and don't repeat them.

No, you need faith. Faith in yourself. If you believe in yourself, you'll get far. Luck is a very dangerous thing to depend on.
