For example, if someone knows my old password, couldn't they sign in under "forgot password" and get the new one?

If you have doubts, change it asap and use number, symbols and letter combinations for added security. It is a good idea to change ones password every four weeks.

Well if it ever happend that way you would know about it because first you woudn't be able to get into your mail unless you know the new one and also if you do get into it then you will also be notified by yahoo that it was changed.
