Actually, neither--Hope is a comedian. Yeah, starred with Crosby in all those "Road" movies, and had his own golf tournament every year at Pebble Beach. Sorry, I couldn't resist.
OK, in all seriousness, I consider Hope a blessing. As bad as things can be for people, as long as there is Hope, it is survivable. Hope is what gives people the ability to look foreward to a time when things will be better. Hope for better days is what allows many people struggle against adversity. It was the hope for a better world for their children and grandchildren that made the marchers in Selma, Montgomery and hundreds of other places decide to stand up and confront the racism and bigotry throughout the South during the heyday of the Civil Rights Movement. It was the Hope for a better life that caused a man in the 19th Century to pack his family and all their belongings into covered wagons and set off for the farming country of the Midwest or the gold fields of California. Many people believe that as long as there is Hope, anything is possible. (This would seem to make False Hope a curse, but that a topic for another day.) If Hope is that uplifting, the absence of Hope can be just as devestating. The cancer or HIV patient who holds on to his or her hope often lives much longer, and with a better quality of life than any of those treating them would have thought possible. The patient who loses hope often gives up and dies, even when their cancer was eminently curable. It is often the lack of hope in a better way that will turn a young person in a city toward the "gang banger" lifestyle. The sheer hopelessness of life in a region such as the Middle East that makes it possible for a person to strap an explosive belt to himself, walk into a crowed area, and detonate the belt and themselves with it.
Yeah, our hopes can be dashed, but more often than not it is because we didn't temper our hopes with realistic expectations. From time to time, we all indulge in wishful thinking, or "pie-in-the-sky," but we know enough not to be devestated when those sorts of things don't come to pass. Hope helps us to bear up during hard times, dangerous times, frightening times. Hope in our spirit can keep us going when our bodies are danger of failing. Hope for the future makes it possible for us to make sacrifices that will benefit not us, but our children and their children. In these and so many other ways, Hope may be the greatest of blessings, whether you believe it comes from Pandora's Box, the psychic energy all around us, or God in Heaven. (Holy @#%&, are we being long-winded...a thousand apologies, but you asked, and I answered!)

Hope has been included in the Pandora's box as an exception. In the scheme of things, God never makes any things as an unalloyed homogeneous mix. Where there are far too many misfortunes, you will ultimately find some thing beneficial to you. In darkness, there will be a light at the end of the tunnel. You will find a silver lining in a hopelessly dark and gloomy situation. Afflictions that mankind suffers on opening of the Pandora's box will after all strengthen will of the man and he will come on top of them. A ray of hope will emerge finally.

it depends, from the way you see it. If u use this term "USE" to reflect how u maximise its functions, then its good, but when the term is on the context u "USE" someone, it could give u another kind of thoughts, not a positive one. As you misplace HOPE and EXPECT,....probably you'll be lost trying to differentiate while u already apply the term for a certain thing, under certain circumstances. whats the big idea first, for you to judge is it a virtue or a vice....never can you estimate it if u're not living it, consciously or not ...yet you can find the difference somehow if u put the right names on the right picture, eventually.

Hope is a desire for something to happen, it provides an incentive to move on in life. Hope is a blessing thats gives you something to hold on too and becomes a bigger blessing when the hope is realise. For some it gives a reason to live through difficult times.
The moral of Pandora Box consist of two things, that curiousity gets the better of us and hope gets us through troubles and sadness and makes us feel that tomorrow will be better. Hope compensates us.

Both
Depending on what, when and how.
If there wasnt hope, would people
a. really strive for and try getting things done?
b. plant a tree and wait for it's fruits?
c. go through education in the hope of a good career?
d. litigate against crime or wrongs done?
.... millions other things.....
So, it's necessary to be hopeful and have hopes
things which are practically not possible; things which are not in line with the scheme of matters; - ya, there it's bad to have hopes- in fact, FALSE HOPES.

Well, some people hope that there is a God...so, it's a torment. Or maybe a vice. Guess that all depends on who you ask, right?

It would all depend on what you are hoping for.
It can lead to heartbreak, but can also fuel the motivation behind incredible accomplishments. It's always worth the risk...that is what dreams are made of.

it all depends on how you use it.
i always hope for the best, and expect the worst.
I believe that if people use hope without researching to see if they are wishing on something that can really happen are foolish.
