The product is for homes/ townhomes and/or yards. To be more specific, "How do I contact a distributor to help me get my product carried or stocked at stores like Wal-Mart, HomeDot or Lowes?

You need to contact their corporate purchase dept, and get listed as one of their suppliers.

It is much easier to get things into smaller specialtt stores and you will find you will make more profit on them. Walmart, Lowes etc usually stock from big suppliers who can make products cheaply and in bulk. Do you have any way of making your product in bulk.
A lot of the smaller specialty stores are owner operated so you can talk to the buyer just by walking in the front door. Take a sample or photo of your product and ask if they will do a trial run. Offer to supply them a couple on a no sell, no charge basis so that they know they are not taking a chance. In other words they stock them for a couple of months and if they don't sell you take the product back and give them their money back. If you do this they are probably more likely to put your product on the shelf because they know thy will not lose money if it doesn;t sell.
Try doing this with a couple of stores around your area and expand from there.
I am in Australia so unfortunately I cannot give you any store names that would be good to start but I am thinking of small franchise type businesses employing only a few people.

Too late for this year. Market it on the internet unless you can afford to wait till next year. Most general product stores order the products in the Spring.

go to the company's website and look for a link that is specifically for that and it will lead you in the right direction...getting hooked up with walmart though is a good/bad thing. they will likely stock it nation wide but not allow for much of a profit for you if you can get in to wal mart.

For Wal-mart, have your product manufactured in China. 80% of their goods are made there.

Be sure to get a patent on your product. I can't really help you with the rest. I'm sure if you get a patent on it offers will come in to represent you and help you get it selling.
