Go to your states DMV web site.
The designations generally indicate the number of axles under the vehicle that you are approved to drive or pull and number of people. But check with the agency that regulates driver licenses in your state.
Class 1 (or A) used to mean you could drive tractors plus two trailers (six axles) Class 2 (B) used to mean school buses.

I don't know what the difference in A,B,and C are. Maybe varies for what you can drive. Such as a motorcycle endorsement.
And a Commercial drivers license (CDL) is needed to drive large trucks such as tactor trailors (Semi) Because they are different and carry large loads, so they handle differently. Such as braking takes longer, turning the machine is different with a load, loads might shift, down hill braking with a heavy load and using the exhaust brake, etc... So you have to have special training for it. That also includes Hazmat, which is for hazarous materials. That covers how to handle them, what to do if it spills, etc.... So the fact that they take more knowledge, more skill, and a hell of a lot more process and controls they wont let just anyone with a drivers license drive one. You have to have the classes and no driving while intoxicated offences.
