Sounds like either a damaged/broken pawl or worn out universal joints along the drive-shaft. The least expensive would be worn out "U" joints. Is your vehicle four wheel drive? If yes, then you have twice as many "U" joints to inspect. To test the "U" joints, elevate the vehicle with the shift lever in park position. Get under the car and look closely at all "U" joint connections along the drive shaft(s) (two drive-shafts if you have a 4WD vehicle). If nothing obvious, then try to twist the drive shaft(s) clockwise then counterclockwise. searching for movement at the "U" joint connections, and hope you find a worn "U" joint. The replacement is not very expensive, but the labor is time consuming.

If the problem is the pawl, then I am sorry.
The pawl is engaged only when you shift the linkage to park position. In an automatic trans it is a mechanical finger or hook that locks up the gears from turning.
Someone may have shifted into park while the vehicle was rolling, and broken parts may be catching in the gear when you shift out of park.
Try shifting into neutral and using the emergency brake until you can have it properly diagnosed. Unfortunately, visual inspection is accessed only with transmission removed and disassembled.
A tranny shop will charge approx 1500 -1800 usd to R & R the job. Consider selling it as is.
