Every time when I travel to the US I get a plugged nose and a soar throat from the a/c everywhere...
Why is that and how do I work against it?

The air on planes is very dry (often less that 15% relative humidity) to prevent condensation. You get dehydrated, and your sinuses and throat dry out. Best bet is to pass on the free champagne and coffee, and drink TONS of water instead. If you don't have to pee every one to two hours, you aren't drinking enough... Any time I'm on a plane for more than 2 hrs I have the same problem. I bring two 1-liter bottles of water on board, and chug them in the first hour of the flight. Then I continue drinking only water, 7-Up or fruit juice when beverage service comes around. Oh, and eat the pretzels-- the salt will help to moisturize your throat.
On land, continue to drink a lot of water. At night I like to turn the ac to the lowest setting, or off altogether. You might also try using a saline nasal spray- available in the pharmacy or any supermarket under the brand "Ocean".

It's not the airconditioning. It's the mold in bathrooms. The little black stuff in the grout. The ONLY time I get sick is when there is a lot of it in the grout and I stay more than a couple days. It does not depend on where, Las Vegas at Caesars Palace, Hong Kong, or Bangkok. If the bathrooms walls are cleaned or fairly clean, then I don't get sick. This is even true at home. The shower is clean but, if there is an accumulation of mold in the grout. Check it out.

I take a sweater with me all the time. For some reason, the restaurants think they have to blast you with cold air.
