Liberalism, in all the aspects I have encountered it today, seems to sour the relationship between individual and society. I guess its a new form of puritinism, whatever you want t call it. But the thing that makes it bad, is that it takes away the incentive for the goodwill from individuals, and instead, makes it mandatory...

its like people were to demand you to give them a gift for their birthday. If you reduce the goodwill to a social contract, where everyone is bitter and demands that you give back to the society, the individual immidietly has a distaste to such an atmosphere, and therefore his giving back, or what yo uwould generally call 'goodwill', dies inside of him, and turns into an “appearance” of giving back, making the endeavour hypocritical, and souring the way he views others in his community privately ---such a society isn't welcoming or accepting, and therefore people are generally bitter, contrived and hypocritical....

humans can be selfish--but in most people's lives, there comes a point, where you realize that TRUE HAPPINESS comes from giving to others--and that goodwill is like karma, it comes back---

However, if you take away the incentive, and make it into a "social contract"---then its a burden to give back to society---because its composed of bitter and resentful beings---thus, you actually create an enviroment of everybody "fend for themselves"...as brazen as it might be.

what has happened is that our society has become increasingly materialistic, so it is only natural to seek a more "community" oriented society. But to enforce a "social contract" is not the answer, it will just bring hypocrisy and sour the relationship between individual and society ,which we depend so much...

instead, we should give INCENTIVE to the individual, by being a welcome and open-minded society...not expecting anything...but when the individual does do something good, we make them feel good for it

2006-11-15 17:23:43 · update #1

in other words...when the individual does finally give back to the community, we praise him/her...its a (not enforced, we do not expect), but if you do it, you will receive warmth from the community...

not the other way around with the punishment first: if you don't give, we will resent you for it, because we expect it from you, if you do give, its no big deal, everyone does the same...

in such a society, nobody wants to give back---and worsens the society as a whole.

If you want an alternative to materialism, it isn't 'collectivism'---its a social conscious that do good and you shall receive good...not, don't do, and you shall receive hate...

you get rid of the hang ups and resentment ,and make up a society of casual and regular nice people...

otherwise, it just arises hypocrisy, and it will actually be an incentive for individuals in such a society, to NOT GIVE BACK and become even MORE materialistic, as a form of rebellion, having the opposite effect that was intend

2006-11-15 17:24:06 · update #2

the COMMUNITY should be composed of frank people that go out of their way in honesty....you feel that old disappearing feeling of "warmth"....its the type of people that will tell you things how they really are, because their regular people, even if it may be out of their way to tell you such things or goes agaisnt an established authority...

such honesty wins people over, instead of "appearances" of friendlienss and the good ol hypocracy that insults the intelligence...

yes, it will save you the trouble of having to confront unanticipated situations...but you lose so much more---you lose the goodwill, the trust, and the respect of all the individuals in the community....

and this invites a whole set of other ugly underground phenomena...such as:

-hazing or disrespect of others because the individuals through indirect means because in these individuals feel their community is worthless...

2006-11-15 17:27:37 · update #3

just a machine that tells them lies and has a policy of screweing the "individual for the greater whole"

and this is exactly the philosophy behind totalitarianism --conformity is key, and the individual is descredited and open-mindedness, for political correctness and the demanded expectation of all citizens.

I think we should learn from the latin-american community in this respect:

DO NOT BE SO UPTIGHT, BE WELCOMING AND BE PRONE TO GOODWILL...and people will NATURALLY give back to society.

I think the problem with AMERICAN SOCIETY nowadays is that WE ARE TOO UPTIGHT---, hence, giving way to our hypocracy....

individuals prize honesty...why are so many people saying they "love" borat? its because inside, they seek the honesty and franknes...warmness of a society with no hang ups---

I leave the numbers at the box office, and the increasingly 'unhappy american' as a spokesmen to my words..

however...I do not endorse the kazahk society in borat...that was ridiculous (lol)...it was exagerated...but the underlying POINT was clear--

bid u all good day.

2nd answerer:

maybe they don't care about others as much as you say, because of the very liberal atmosphere that has soured the relationship between individual and society...making individuals hate other people...

maybe if we were a little open-minded, things would be different.

Yes, people are selfish, but "collectivism" will make society WORSE, not better. It will make the good people in society HATE others for being bitter and demanding they give something, the bad people will rebell even MORE---and the middle of the road people, which is the true catastrophe, will just STOP looking at their society as valueble and this is when you have what I would call.....a "bankruptcy of goodwill" in society.

And I think then you will have just a breakdown in everything...crime will go up, racism will go up just as a rebellion toward political correctness, and social instability will wreak havoc...

with the beautiful "final solution" then coming into play---the police state..

2006-11-15 18:40:19 · update #7

yea...you think that's awkward...that liberalism would lead to a police state?

is it a coincidence that the very liberal socialist party in the US, is also the neo-nazi party? I don't think so--

The same people that scream for not going to iraq, for peace and understanding, claiming violence should not be resolved with violence...

will be the same people DEMANDING the taking of freedoms in a policed state.

2006-11-15 18:42:58 · update #8

maybe we should just be a little open-minded, and not so fanatical our-selves...not so uptight and cold....and then maybe, just maybe...someone might be inclined to talk to you, or give you an open hand...

but in a society where materialism is key, and liberalism has bankrupted goodwill...you have the superficial with the material, and you eliminate the deep with what is liberalism..

this is the worst combination since hitler.

I believe you are hoping for an enlightened society where balance of giving and taking is the norm. Howerver, you live in a society that will step all over people to get ahead. The rich get richer and the poor get poorer. When you blame that on the liberals - you are simply pointing fingers. The conservatives believe in giving breaks to large corporations that have no care for it's employees. If it were a perfect world, people would give a hand up, not a hand out. But also, medical coverage would be affordable, you would be able to make a living without killing yourself to get ahead. There would be no need for things such as welfare and bancruptcy. Instead, communities would forge networks that helped each other out. But again - this is not a perfect society. It is a society mixed up of people who give, people who take, people who would screw you over for a cup of coffee and those who would go out in the cold to give coffee to the homeless. Your plan looks good on paper - but it wouldn't work because people will always be people and some just don't care about others.

You know, you have to stop writing the question before you can get answers.

I agree with much of what you say. I am a Libertarian. But frankly, this is not the way to do it. Take it from someone who usually writes long answers, there is a limit to how much you can pack into one question before people no longer read it.

It is absolutely true that you cannot legislate a feeling of generosity. What had been given freely in an earlier age is now taken by force of tax collector ten-fold. One-tenth may (or may not) go to the actual unfortunate who is supposedly helped. The other 9/10ths go to salaries, benefits and costs to the bureaucrats who administer what had once been a simple local charity. In the meantime, they make the eligibility requirements such that almost everyone has to lie in order to receive help, and that can then be held over your head anytime a petty bureaucrat needs a little jolt of power trip.

Also, modern liberalism tends to reduce the number of available jobs, regulating them away in order to pump up salaries, benefits and "expense accounts" for those who work for the government, or for industries that contract with the government.
