Is my chinchilla deaf now?

Question

I keep my chinchilla in my bedroom. He's usually very hyperactive and happy to meet... just about everyone and everything. But last night, after I went to sleep and left him playing with a chew toy, a stack of shelves that I had set up on the wall collapsed. I had all kinds of stuff on the shelves, plus the boards themselves were pretty heavy--needless to say, it was LOUD! My chinchilla's cage is about a foot and a half away from the edge of where all the shelves fell down.

Today, when it was time for his dinner, he didn't come as soon as I shook the can, which I thought was strange. Also, when I was in a different room, I could hear him making those irritated noises--the little barks they make when they're unhappy or bothered. But he was all by himself! When I checked on him, he didn't respond to me tickling his chin or anything. When I tried to give him a treat, he just sat there.

I know chinchillas' hearing is a lot more sensitive than ours--is he traumatized now? What can I do?

Actually a chinchilla's ears are the closest to our own hearing of any other animal. (My husband is an audio engineer and looks up these kinds of geeky things).

If your chinchilla isn't responding to you touching him...he might be traumatized, not deaf. If he were deaf, he wouldn't respond to noises. Since he is not responding to noise or when you are touching him, he's probably freaked out or in shock. Our chin always responds to touching even if he ignores us (his fav thing to do).

Take him to the vet if it keeps up, if he stops eating, or if he isn't drinking.

I love those little furballs! Terrific little critters. I suggest you at least call your Vet and ask a few questions. Don't know if you are as attached to your little guy as I was to my Ferret but it is worth the time to find out. And yes, they can be traumatized. My little black Chin had been abused and it took him almost a year before he would allow me to pick him up. After that, he wouldn't leave me alone so they are pretty resilient. Maybe he's just in a little shock... ya know? - I mean it probably was a little tramitizing, the 1st time he's allowed out and stuff.
