Adam West defined the original campy Batman of TV, but that's really a whole different character from the current interpretation of the post-1980's world. Thank you Frank Miller...

Christian Bale certainly had the best MOVIE as a vehicle for the character (Batman begins is vastly superior to any of it's predecessors) and captured the "dark knight" aspect that escaped other recent actors. I hated Keaton, but loved Jack as the Joker. Clooney was good, but still came across as Clooney rather than Bruce Wayne and yeesh, that movie was god-awful. The best part was Alfred threatening to throw away food in front of a Starving Robin. Val Kilmer was really excellent, but he just didn't look anything like Bruce Wayne.

So I gotta go with Christian Bale!!!

None of the newer Batman's seemed to be able to convince me that they can be both a billionaire playboy as well as the Dark Knight. The only one who somewhat convinces me was George Clooney. He looked the part of Bruce. Only problem is that he wasnt the greatest Batman. Micheal Keaton did a horrible job in my book. Val was a good Batman, but didnt look like a Bruce. That only leaves Adam West and Christian Bale. You gotta give West some credit though; he was the original. Bale has the darker, dirtier look for Batman. If I had to say, I would have to say Bale. He convinces the audience that Bruce is useless and just throws money around. At the same time, Batman was a much darker figure than any of the other versions.

i think the best batman was Christian Bale. he redefined the character and made him into the person he was supposed to be. DC Comics created Batman and i think they did a good job telling the story and molding the character into what they wanted him to be.
Before Christian Bale, i think Michael Keaton was ok as Batman, just needed sum height and shouldn't have been so conspicuous as Bruce Wayne.
George Clooney was not right to play Batman.
Val Kilmer was exceptional

I don't think there is even a comparison to make here. The only real serious movies of Batman were the Nolan movies. Everything else prior was campy and had a fake comic book look to it. Much of Nolan's movies were filmed in Chicago and it had a much more real look to it. Plus, Keaton was a wimp.. He got his *** kicked by the black dude badly in the bell tower in the first one. The only person who kicked Bale's *** was Bane, but that was after he was older and weakened thru time. The in his prime Batman of the DK would have destroyed Keaton in seconds. Bale's character was Ninja trained. How was Keaton's character trained? Hanging from a pole in his living room?

Christian Bale

Micheal Keaton.

He filled both roles pretty well. He was aloof but human as Bruce Wayne as well as Stoic and dark as Batman. Plus he was (at the time) known much more as a comedian then as a dramatic actor and pulled off the part perfectly. Kilmer and Clooney both had one part of the "Batman Duality" down but the other part was lacking...
And Bale is a great Batman but not quite the "best"... not yet.

Keaton hands down. Christian Bale wasn't too bad either, but Clooney was just a plain horrible Batman.
