When I change the water, I see a lot of fine debris (look like broken up pieces of faeces that got agitated up from the gravel) for a few hours. Is it advisable to keep the fish outside the tank until the "dust settles"?

Use a suction gravel cleaner at least once a week and you wont get so much muck being stirred around. :D

Personally I think that there is no harm putting the fishes in with the new water. It just look alittle unsightly.

A suggestion is for you to buy a vacum head pump(manual or connected to a filter inlet) which allow you to vacum your gravel while the old water is drain from your tank. This can remove most of the waste so that when you refill the tank, there will be less stuff floating sround.

If you are performing that type of "cleaning" to your acquarium then you should also wash the gravel.
Just buy a colandar and fill it about 1/3 to 1/2 full with the gravel from your tank, and stir it up very good under running water to rinse the "debris" out. It will really help you maintain a better water quality for your fish.

Good luck!

When I bought a fish I asked at the pet store about that . They put the fish in a small bag with the water form the stores tank. He said two hours. Make sure the new water has clorine drops in it or it will die, and that the water is not to hot.
