i have a traditional method. stick a plastic straw on ground or something so it stands up. cover it with glue, than cover it again with sugar. the fly will attract to the sweet and land on the straw, but won't be able to fly back, because their feet stick in the glue. they will die exhausted. when the straw is full of flies bodies just replace it with a new one

We used to catch flies and put tiny pins through them and tie a thread to the end of the pin and hold the thread and watch the flies fly around in a circle. I don't know if they died from dizziness, the pin or exhaustion.

Okay, you're not going to believe this until you try it...
Get a cup..add a couple drops of dishsoap and add water...
To about a 1/4 inch from the top...
At night when the flies are sleeping on the ceiling, bring the cup of water up to them slowly and cover the fly completely with the cup.....and wa la... They'll drop....dead, into the water....
Good luck with your assignment...! ! !

Get one of those fly zappers that look like tennis rackets. Killing flies becomes a very fun sport.

This is my all time favorite way.We used to have a pellet gun, pistol type and would pump up the air chamber and not load a pellet. The resulting BLAST of air was enough to take down the vermin. It was like Elvis and the TV shooting days.Great fun.

You could try catching them in a large plastic container. I do that, then I shake them around or run the sides of the container in hot water. It's their own fault if they get caught.
Before when we had a moth in the bathroom, my older brother swatted it into the sink and lit him on fire with one of those like long neck lighter things, like this: http://www.broilkingbbq.com/images/GrillPro/31714568.jpg
