CDs are made of plastic.

And plastic scratches very easily.

If you ever buy a box of blank DVDs, it comes with a clear DVD without anything on it. That's how I discovered they were plastic. Until then, I was fooled into believing they were some kind of metal.

Clean your CD players regularly with a special solution/CD they sell at electronic stores. It should reduce scratches alot, also opening the CD player while the CD is not stopped can add to that...and yes, car stereos are the worst...

Tiny particles in the things we put the CDs in and on. Stuff like dust or sand or pocket debris.
