I have always had an oversupply of milk. I don't think I've ever emptied. So, I only nurse my 12 week old daughter on one side at each feeding. When she nurses on my right, she stay on for almost 30 minutes. When she nurses on my left, she's done after only 10 or 15 minutes. My left side does come out a LOT faster than my right side, but is 10 minutes really enough time for a full meal? She's gaining weight okay, and I alternate every feeding.

It's normal to have one breast be a better "supplier" than the other. If she is having wet and poopy diapers and gaining weight everything is fine! Good job Momma, breastfeeding is difficult but so worth it!

As long as she is staying on the breast for long enough to get hindmilk (richer in fats) as well as foremilk (richer in vits and minerals), is getting enough wet and dirty nappies a day, is growing and seems contented, do not worry. That sounds like it is the case.

Your milk supply will eventually (soon) start to match her demand. If the millk oversupply is bothering you, you can try to regulate it by feeding her from both breasts at each feed, so that each is getting a similar signal. At the moment, they probably think they are providing for twins who feed at different times! You could try to switch her over half way through the feed, (break the suction with a little finger in the corner of her mouth *before* attempting to remove her :)

My second child fed every half hour for five minutes. she had the health visitor hopping as she grew only 2 ounces a week. At 11 years old now, she eats in mcuh the same way- until she is no longer hungry- and then stops. She is still growing, albeit rather slender and a little of the short side, but we are not worried about her any more.

This may sound gross, but how's her poo? If she is nursing for that long on one side, she will be sure to get the hindmilk. If there is an imbalance, then her poo will be green and somewhat frothy. If it's normal than she is just faster at getting al the milk from the left. If she seem satisfied, then she really is getting enough in that 10 minutes. It will all balance out in the next few months.

My son is 21 months still prefers the left and will only nurse very briefly on the right.

My daughter does the same thing. And she is a very healthy 7 1/2 month old.

You are doing fine, sometimes one side lets down faster than the other...thats all. Maybe she is more comfortable on one side so she wants to relax and have a good feeding, whereas the otherside might not be as comfy so she hurrys along. As long as she seems satisfied after every meal and she is gaining weight, I wouldnt be worried...Though this would be a good question to ask her pediatrician if that would make you feel better.

Best wishes!

As long as she is gaining weight then I am sure she is perfectly fine.My son liked to nurse on my right side more because it produced more milk then my left side for some reason. He would nurse alot longer on my right although I always did both sides each nursing so that I did not feel weird with 1 breast full and the other empty.I am 26 weeks pregnant with my 2nd and it will probably be the same way.

If she is gaining weight OK and having plenty of wet and dirty diapers then she is probably just fine. As they get older, they get better at extracting the milk quicker. And if one side has more milk ducts or flows faster, that could contribute too. Trust her to know what she needs. If you are unsure, you can always offer her the other side after a short feed and see what she does.

Yes, My little guy will eat out of one breast in 5-10 minutes, you may have good milk supply, meaning high milk and low milk together. As long as he is gaining weight, 6-12 wet diapers a day and his poops are normal, yellow and seedy. he is ok. if you have concerns please talk to a lactation consultant. You never do empty, you get soft but never really empty

That is all my daughter nurses for from each breast - 10 minutes. As long as she seems satisfied and is gaining well, you're doing just fine.

If she is terminating the feed herself and is not restless chances are she is getting enough. Offer her the other breast afterwards and if she does not take it she is most likely had sufficient.
