If remember correctly Bush only won by something like 51%. Which is not a huge margin and for sure not a "mandate" as he put it. So this mid-term election should not have been a surprise.

Enough babble the variables I believe effected the 2004 election are:
Region and Religion

Geography....The confederate south votes... Red or Republican...
