This is very typical of South Inida.I feel its just a way of showing respect and basic courtesy to the other person, in hope that they will reply back without misunderstanding and also incase a conversation nedds to be striked it can be an ice breaker.Looking into it,when our parents name us, they only think well so why this good name bad name business.Hope i was able to clear atleast a small amount of your doubt.Take care.!!!!

It is a most polite form of asking someone's name. This depicts a very good impression of the questioner in the answerer's mind and pave way for an amicable future relation with each other. The person who thinks of other's good will also receive good returns.Asking someone's name in this manner is an exemplary teaching of our well behaved ancestors.Be polite in doing anything and you will enjoy the consequence of it. All the best!!!

Where the heck are you from? I never say what is your "good" name when asking people who they are. I think you might mean an inference to someone's "good name" meaning the reputation associated with them. If someone is talkin' crap and its not true, they are trashing someone's "good" name.

In China, if you ask for someone's honorable name, you are asking politely for their family name.

It expresses one's culture and behaviour. As we usually say subh naam, subh tithi, subh samvatsar and so on. Good is the english version of subh and hence we call good name.
