OK, write the equation as it is stated:

Let x = the number
so: x+10 is the number increased by 10
therefore the equation becomes:
4 (x+10) = 22
4x + 40 = 22
4x = 22 - 40
4x = -18
x = - 18/4 or -4 1/2

If I am understanding this correctly, then it looks like there are two numbers, that, when multiplied together (the product of the two) equals 22. Let x = a number. That means x +10 is that number increased by 10. x + 10 is the first number. The second number is 4. (x+10)4 = 22.
4x + 40 = 22
4x = -18
x = -18/4
x = - 9/2
If I am incorrect, I apologize; this is what it appears to mean to me.

(x+10)(x+4)=22 can be simplified to x^2+14x+40=22 can be simplified to x^2+14x+18=0. Then you can solve for x by plugging the coefficient for variables into the quadratic formula. Click on the link below and then plug the variables in. Sure hope you know the order of opperations. In the end x has two solutions, both
(-1.35) and (-12.56) Hopefully this helped you out.

let x= the #
increased by 10: x+10
product of this & 4: 4(x+10)
is 22: =22
4( x+10)=22
4x+40=22
4x=-18
x=-9/2

a number increased by 10 = x+10

so...
4*(x+10)=22
x+10=22/4
x = -18

i think orca got the wording of it wrong
its 4 times (the number increased by 10)

(x+10)*(x+4) = 22
x2 + 14x + 40 = 22
(x + 7)2 = 31
(x+7) = ±√31
x = -7±√31
