I use to sell mens shoes at dillard for about 3 years
after i made my quote which was 75 dollars for every hour i worked... everything i made aftter that i gained in commision
so if i worked for 100 hours for the month i had to sell 7500 dollars that month if i sold 8000 bucks i got i want to say 11.5 percent of the 500 bucks i sold. so about 60 bucks extra in my pay.. plus i got 9.50 an hour.
So working in the Shoe department at Dillard was awesome... i made great money...
but womans shoes sell better than mens... mens are really expensive but.... woman buy more shoes than men more often.

Yes you can certainly make money but always try for fixed salary + commission as there is a very tough internal competition within the staff at a department store. Also ensure that you get a good moving section to handle.

A commission job is the better way to go. The more people that like you and buy from you the more money you make.

You can make a bit more than the average salesperson, but remember, like waiting tables you get sales by "your turn." most of the time, so you can only make so much. However, the good thing is when you are given your business cards you can hand them out and tell people to visit you personally, which is a good thing. Another bad thing is you can't stand outside, or wherever and bring people in...stores don't dig that. Good thing, you have a bit more security than a normal sales job where it begins and ends with you. Good job if you wish to learn marketing and going into hardcore sales later on. Good Luck!

A Commission based assignment is a challenge to your ingenuity and learning ability. It is a great opportunity. Grab it with both hands, and make the best of it. You will lay a solid foundation for a career in marketing and possibly for your own business in the future. Good Luck!

If you have good customer service, a good product line, time to invest, and passion for what you are doing---yes. My mom sold window coverings at JCPenney throughout my college years and did great. She made about $15 per hour on average (which is a rockstar salary in the retail world). You have to build a good client base.
