the early bird gets the worm - first come first served
the 2nd mouse - the first mouse is dead in the mouse trap, so being first isnt always best, sometimes you should let someone else try something first, and learn from their mistakes.

The early bird being the first to arrive gets to eat the "worm" whatever food is available before other birds arrive. In the case of the mouse however, the first mouse springs the mousetrap and is killed while the second mouse may safely eat the cheese or other bait from a trap that is already sprung and therefore not a danger.
The moral? While being first is many times beneficial, to err on the side of caution may also be a prefered course of action. When the depth is not known it is better to wade in slowly than to dive in headfirst.

There's the phrase "The early bird catches the worm" - which means that if there's only one worm, the first bird will get to eat it.

But the answer is "The second mouse gets the cheese" - you normally fill mousetraps with cheese. The first mouse will get caught in the trap, but the second mouse can safely get the cheese because the trap has already caught the first mouse.

So it means something like "Yes, you should usually be the first to do something, but the first one to try something usually gets stuck, so you shouldn't be the first to make a mistake."

Sayings are not necessarily very smart or they don't always make too much sense. This one does, though: if you do a honest work, you'd better wake up early and get ahead of the others. If you don't, stay behind and "harvest the crops" after the danger is gone. Explanation: the birds who are eating worms are the symbol of honest people doing good things (eliminatig the worms who could destroy the trees). The mice destroys the crops, therefore we are trying to catch them by planting traps where we out... cheese. The first one gets killed by the trap, therefore it is the second mouse who gets the cheese.
Got it?

Yes, the early bird gets the worm, but mice do not really like cheese because it is too salty. It is a hungry mouse that eats cheese.

"The early bird gets the worm" means that waking up early has its benefits like if you were a businessman you'll be getting the clients etc. The other one :" the second mouse gets the cheese", means that being too early has its own disadvantage too like, the first one gets "trapped" so the second rat gets the cheese instead..i .e. going to a party so early that no one is there yet. etc.

It is a metaphor used to say that first isn't always best. (the first mouse dies in the trap)

It can be used in a variety of instances, in golf, for example, sometimes it is better to watch how the ball curves on the green.

If you are the first of your friends to do something, you may not know what to look for until someone else has made the mistakes first.
