and why does it zip up instead of down to close?
down to close makes more sense.

The zipper itself isn't the fly, it's the fold of material.

"Fly" used to mean something attached on the side, like a tent flap, or a piece of fabric on a garment that conceals a fastener.

If it zipped down to close then it would fly open when you sat down. Maybe that's is why it is called a fly because it can fly open. Before the zipper buttons were used.

Fly was the term used for a front opening in trousers/slacks/pants. The zipper was there to close the "fly"

i think its called a fly because it sounds like it when you zip it up and i have no idea why it zips up instead of down but good question, I also would like to know
