I think it may be a nervous response. You are feeling awkward, and the one thing you think to yourself is 'no don't laugh', its that pressure, your nerves give out, and the next thing you know you are laughing uncontrollably. Been there done that.

Laughter is an uncontrollable reaction to having received a lot of insight with great suddenness.

So when someone is distraught and beside themselves, they will cry, and observing that gives you insights. valuable insights about how someone really feels.

So, all by itself, it can stimulate laughter.

This has nothing to do with whether or not you have compassion.
