The absolute BEST method for learning to ride a bike is the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) course. Search the internet for a place near you that offers this course. It is the best money you'll ever spend on safety besides proper gear.
Speaking of gear... It is not a good idea to wear sandals while riding. Every time you get on that bike, you should be wearing a full face helmet, a suit with armor protection, full fingered gloves and over the ankle footwear.
If you get on a bike with anything less than that, you are taking huge risks with your body.
Road rash is not pretty and emergency rooms are not delicate when cleaning the dirt and gravel out of it. They use a stiff bristle brush and are not very gentle when using it.
But, road rash would be the least of your concerns if you get into an accident without the proper gear.
Between a helmet, a suit, boots and gloves, plan on paying about $1,000. That might sound like a lot of money but ask yourself how much are your legs worth to you?
***Edit
No, people won't think you're an idiot. We all had to start somewhere. The beauty about taking the course is that everyone is new to riding so you are all learning. Some people pick it up faster than others. The females tend to be more intimidated in the class because they're too concerned about what other people think of them which causes them to make mistakes.
Try to relax and not care what others think. And if someone is acting immature, then they're not worth getting upset over. Usually your perception of what others think of you is all in your mind. Most people don't really care what you're doing or how you're doing it.

Contact the Motorcycle Safety Foundation at http://www.msf-usa.org/. For around 2 hundred dollars, you'll take a motorcycle safety class where you could use their motos in case you crash. As far as wearing sandals. Worse case scenerio, your feet will be graded by the asphalt to a bloody stump should you have an accident. Rule of thumb, if you have the gear wear it! Besides, Moto gear makes you look cool, and if you are hot, then even more reason to wear it.

you're gonna need some shoes that protect your feet, sandals are a bad idea.
and why would anyone think you're dumb for not knowing how to do something you've never even tried? thats like saying "wont ppl think i'm stupid for not knowing how to arch-weld??"
well, if you didnt grow up around welding materials, then you have no reason to feel bad for not knowing how to do it. look in the phone book, there are schools that teach you how to ride. its a great feeling to go for a ride on a nice day. i like taking side roads, highway riding is not as much fun (at least not in new england anyway). find a friend with a bike and ask to go with them around the block a few times. start off easy while you build up confidence and experience.

Almost every state has a motorcycle safety course. They are well worth it, and you learn a lot on small motorcycles. You`ll get a discount on your insurance as well. Not it is not legal to wear flip flops or sandals on a bike. It is kinda dumb too. Have a fun day

You shouldn't ride sandals on a motorcycle. There are motorcycle driving schools that will teach you but you didn't say where you live. I searched on the internet and found some. costs about $275.

I like the answers above. But, most important, get on one and take it for a ride around the block. Just do it. You're smart enough to figure it out. Go slow. Wear a helmet. Be careful. And have some fun.

The best way to learn is to get out there and practice, and you need a learner legal bike to do that in this state.
Join a riding school if you need some riding tips.
Never wear sandals on a motorbike.
And just get out there and enjoy yourself. I did it, and i'll never regret it.
Keep your knees in the breeze...........
Cheers.

Lotta answers, so I'll be short.
I learned in a parking lot and on the back roads where I grew up.
I don't recommend this. Take a course.
It is possible to do and wear almost anything on a motorcycle.
Just because something is possible doesn't mean it's not STUPID. Your feet are the part of you that is closest to the road.
