I have met several people who have no doubts that this city once existed.
I am extremely doubtful, but, as always, open minded......
What do you guys think?

you have to remember that Plato also spoke of other mythical beasts/ islands in the Iliad, most of which have been discredited.
I am of the view that there are many sunken cities etc in the world but nothing of the proportion/ advancement as he mentions in the Iliad.
it there was surely it would have been uncovered by now with all our modern advancements/ technologies
also i trust the running is going well.. grin..

I agree, that myths do evolve and trickle down through history. I understand the previous answer, but then again organized religion and the bible made its way through history too and didn't lose its appeal and unwavering consistence.
I tend to believe it existed, only because the world is constantly changing and moving. Old cities and civilizations disappear and emerge through out history. Volcanos, earthquakes, meteors striking the earth. These are real-world influences that could transform any planetary feature, including a walled city on the edge of the water (or on an island, or self-contained, etc). We as "modern" people probably won't find it since its supposedly underwater, which is an element we have yet to fully probe. As technology advances, I sure we'll find many previous societies that existed back in time, that the earth reclaimed as it will all that we know today.

I think "Atlantis" fits into the same category as the "Terra Australis" (ie, the idea there was a huge continent in the Southern Hemisphere to balance out the land mass in the Northern Hemisphere) - it was a good explanation for something that people of the time didn't understand.

I don't believe Atlantis itself exists or existed, because I have a feeling it was described as a great society and stuff and we'd probably have discovered it by now.
Although I do believe it is possible cities that were once on the surface could be underwater.

The story of "Atlantis" has been tied to several locations in the Mediterranean Sea.
It may have a basis in fact, or it may be just legend.
It must be nice to have no doubts, life is much simpler for the simple.

I dont see how a "myth" like this could be so well known, so popular, with out having some truth to it. ALSO, there have been numerous specials on tv about evidence of its existence. So with these two points, i think that it is LIKELY Atlantis existed.

I believe the evidence suggests a good possibility Atlantis could have existed.

If you wish to read up about "Atlantis" there is interesting information that was given about it by Edgar Cayce (also known as "The Sleeping Prophet"). I have the paperback book on it. Most interesting reading.

I think it was around the Azores. All I remember about it is a control room and a really big wall of water, and a vague feeling of 'I told you so!'
