Don't listen to those chicken answers above. Take the broken spring or part of it to your local hardware store or Lowe's or home Depot and ask for a replacement. Don't worry if the replacement looks smaller. They make some good replacements smaller these days. Thee are a lot of knowledgeable hardware workers that can help you.

First you have to decide if you are current on your life insurance policy. Second, have you chosen and paid for your cemetary plot. Third have you told everyone that you love, how much you love them....tell them one more time.

Why would you risk your life replacing a garage door spring.....pay the 100 bucks to have someone come out and replace both springs and you're good for another 7 years or so......

Do NOT fool around with garage door opener springs. It seriously can take your head off. Call a pro, look in your yellow pages under garage door openers, they're not expensive and they know what they're doing.

if its the kind of spring that stretches out, let the door down and carefully remove the good spring. look up garage doors in the yellow pages and call around till you find some one that will sell you new springs. take your old spring with you and get two new ones.

i really dont recommend you messing with the wind up type....but if you have to.....ask a local professional for advice (it helps to ask for advice when buying new parts)

first of all besure to replace both springs at the same time.

second what type of springs do you have???? the long coil type along the sides of the track, or the type that mounts above the door opening?

third to figure out how much it weighs simply unhook the other spring if it is the long type, and place a scale under the bottom of the door. it will get you close.

Why would you try to do it yourself? Unless you are highly experienced in doing this or you have opened the garage opener before you will create the possibility of hurting yourself seriously or killing yourself.
